KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER CENTRE (KTC) FOR

ADVANCED ANAEROBIC PROCESSES AND BIOGAS SYSTEMS

In November 2013 the Wales Centre of Excellence for Anaerobic Digestion, based at the Sustainable Environment Research Centre in the University of South Wales, was awarded an A4B (ERDF) grant to establish a Knowledge Transfer Centre for Advanced Anaerobic Processes and Biogas Systems.

The project mission is ‘to support organisations developing and deploying advanced anaerobic processes or integrated biogas systems, or components of these’. In order to achieve this the Advanced Anaerobic Processes and Biogas Systems project will deliver R&D activities and knowledge transfer in three broad Technical Areas, intended to reflect three of the ‘Grand Challenges’ faced by the global AD and biogas industry. These are:

• Detailed AD Process Monitoring and Optimisation
• Digestate / Effluent Characteristics and Dewatering Improvements
• Advanced organics conversion (e.g. biological biogas upgrading, production of high calorific biogas and conversion of electricity into green gas)

Within each of these three areas, the project will deliver a number of activities, including:

• Demonstration of advanced monitoring equipment and techniques, and the advantages that can be realised. For example, the AD Centre will work with industrial partners to demonstrate novel monitoring technologies on site, to interpret the data, and quantify the potential benefits to the partner if the technique was adopted over a longer term. Similar site or laboratory based approaches could be made to assess the effectiveness digestate dewatering / treatment approaches.

• Development and delivery of collaborative R&D opportunities, either to improve existing processes or products, or to develop new products or processes. Where industrial partners wish to undertake more research or site specific trials with the aim of the long term integration of advanced monitoring / dewatering / process into their systems, this would be undertaken as part of a collaborative R&D project.

We are currently in the process of procuring new laboratory equipment that will greatly increase the range of collaborative research projects that we can deliver with industry. If you are an organisation active within the AD and biogas sector, or if you want to engage with us to enter into this market, please contact us to discuss the potential for collaboration.
